Ollie’s In May

Back in May Dad and I went to Ollie’s and saw lots and lots of bugs and a few birds.

This osprey almost disappeared before I could snap a picture of him, but lo and behold, I got him!  😀

Ollie’s in August

I’m not going to post long sagas of pictures very often, but I realized that I had a folder full of pictures (from Ollie’s Pond Park back in August) that I wanted to share.

This Green Heron actually let me get close enough to take his picture. Always a plus. 🙂

I liked this picture’s perspective.

A Tri-Colored Heron bathing?  I can’t quite remember what he was doing, but it made for a nice couple of shots!

Augustinian Hawk

It was the spring of 1843, a fine sunny day, and I was — just kidding, I wasn’t even born.
This was a Cooper’s hawk that my dad and I saw on a power line near his house back in August soon after our trip to Tallahassee.  Using this website I am pretty sure that it is not a Sharp-Shinned.

Tallahassee Trip: Day 1, Part 1

DSC_5372

It was amazing what a difference being in the Panhandle of Florida makes to the landscape of Florida and the flora and fauna found there.  I mean, (as my Dad reminded me) we are in the sub-tropics, and Tallahassee isn’t.  Anyway, the hills were so cool. 🙂
We found our hotel all right, and everything there worked out.  Saturday morning we were off to the Florida Caverns State Park!  But on our way there we got a little sidetracked… we found a train!  It was near some baseball and football fields, and seemed to be a type of playground for kids.  But that didn’t stop us!  We had such a fun time taking pictures of each other!  When you see me with my camera, then Dad is taking the picture with his camera.  When I don’t have it, then he is using mine.  Well, enough of me; enjoy!

DSC_5375

We were talking about escaping slaves, homeless people during the Great Depression, and other people who have to jump up onto similar cars like the one we were in, and that inspired this one.  My dad is 6’2, but that was still quite a height!

I love the hay bales…

I love my Converse!

More Converse, but on the old wood flooring this time, giving it a rustic look… 🙂

When I took this I didn’t realize that it looked like I was wearing an old-fashioned blouse and skirt!  Haha!

Dad’s driving!  Oh no! 😀

More artsy shots.

I thought the caboose would be a nice ending for this post.  You’ll see the caverns next time!

Perseids Shower!

Wednesday night was the Perseids meteor shower, so my dad and I stayed up until 4am to capture some shots.

But before that, I tested out bulb mode on my camera.  I actually like the result!  I was in my room, and it captured every aspect.

DSC_5209

Then at Dad’s house I tried out his fluorescent filter.  Very purple!  Haha

DSC_5243

For the actual meteor shower, Dad let me use his 18-somethingmm lens.  I kept it on 18mm for the widest angle, so I can’t remember how far out it zoomed.
But, I actually caught a meteor!!!!!!  I am so happy!!!  It was so worth the sleepless night and mosquitoes!

DSC_5256

I kind of like the power lines in these shots…

DSC_5306 DSC_5318

I loved noticing the earth’s rotation though the shots I was taking.  If you scroll very quickly though this slideshow, then you can see it too. 🙂

Now, these shots were taken at f/3.8, 30 sec. exposure time, and ISO-1600.  Unfortunately, my camera took about 30 seconds to actually write to the card, meaning I was shooting for 1/2 a minute, but the other half I was missing whatever was shooting across the sky.  But most of the meteors I missed were due to wrong angle, not timing.  We saw about 40 meteors roughly, which Dad and I were quite pleased with.  Also, there were fireflies!!!  I didn’t even know they existed in Florida!!!  I kept getting distracted by them, thinking they were meteors in the bushes. 🙂

God outdid himself that night, his creation is wonderful!!!

Chess Moves & Pictures, + Random

I just took some pictures off of my SD card and thought it’d be better if I post them now before I forget. 🙂

The other night, Zoe and I played an interesting game of chess, with me teaching her strategy and good moves along the way, and she (black) put me (white) in a great fork! (partially on accident)  The trap is this (I wasn’t keeping a record of the game, but I’ll give you the rundown) …f3+ whatever number we were on. Kb1 fxe2, which for you non-chess geeks means she takes my queen (very powerful piece) with her pawn (least powerful piece).  I was amazed.  🙂

I wanted to have some fun with my new magnetic chess set, so I set up some different shots, and played with them in Picasa to get the look I was going for.
